jquery - Ajax chat polling bandwidth efficiency -

I have written a small web application which is basically a JQuery powered chat client within the browser, an AJAX request Along with voting on the server and then adding a new answer, I am concerned about making it as efficient as possible while real time is not feeling lost.

It is not possible to see in any way that I am choosing one page every 5 seconds, which does not give anything if to keep a new post data Is not available, if it is useless, then he has a message that the top message is sent in the queue

Any other tips to make it as low bandwidth as possible or possible alternative implementation ?
