Naming decision: "Create it if it doesn't exist" in one word -

I have a Function that checks if there is a certain object present, and if not, then it makes a good word for it. Right now I am using "retain", so the function is called maintain_buffer_on_path , but I think "retaining" is misleading do you think of the name of a better one word Can you?

I usually use for for this.
